Risto Benji

Risto Benji

Risto Benji, born Michael Benjamin, was a talented Jamaican dancehall deejay who made his mark in the 1980s and 1990s with his youthful energy and lyrical prowess. Rising to prominence as a child star in the dancehall scene, he became one of the most recognizable young deejays of his time.

Risto Benji gained widespread attention with songs like "Gun John Crow" and "Passport Buddy," showcasing his witty, socially conscious, and often humorous lyrical style. He was closely affiliated with legendary producer King Jammy, who played a crucial role in shaping his career by producing some of his early and most popular tracks. His high-pitched delivery and rapid-fire flow set him apart from many other artists in the industry.

As a product of dancehall’s golden era, Risto Benji was part of a wave of young deejays who brought fresh energy to the genre. He shared stages and rhythms with some of Jamaica’s most iconic artists, and his early success inspired many younger artists to enter the dancehall scene.

Despite his early promise, Risto Benji's career was marked by struggles, and he eventually faded from the mainstream spotlight. Sadly, his life came to a tragic end in 2011 when he was fatally shot in Kingston, Jamaica. His contribution to dancehall, however, remains significant, and he is remembered as one of the early youth deejay sensations who helped shape the genre’s evolving sound.

His music continues to be appreciated by dancehall fans, and his impact on the genre, especially as a young deejay, remains part of Jamaica’s rich musical history.
